Since 1995, the island of Anjouan in the Comoros archipelago has lost 80% of its forest cover. High levels of poverty, limited alternatives to subsistence farming, high population growth, and destructive typhoons on the island nation of Comoros have led to one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world.
As a result, the Livingstone’s Fruit Bat, found only on the islands of Anjouan and Mohéli in the Comoros archipelago, is confined to narrow strips of forest patches on the highest parts of steep hillsides. With a plummeting population size, this bat species could easily be wiped out with the next tropical storm.
But there is hope.
Together, we can bring this endangered flying fox back from the brink, while also reversing island deforestation and improving the lives of local farmers. We’re poised to jump into immediate action if we meet our goal of raising $245,000 before the end of 2021. With so few remaining bats, every second, and every bat, counts. Please make a gift today.
