STAND UP FOR BATS
A world without bats would look very different than the one you know - and not for the better.
Bats are important for the global community. Without them, we lose essential pollinators, seed dispersers, and pest and disease control. In some habitats, bats play a keystone role preventing ecological collapse.
Conservation of bats and their habitats helps create a healthier, safer world. While the exact chain of transmission that resulted in COVID-19 may never be established, we know that destruction of habitats and exploitation of wildlife, including bats, increase the risk of new viruses jumping into the human population.
Researching bats provides significant value for scientific discovery. Studying disease transmission from animals to humans increases our understanding and ability to predict and prevent zoonotic spillover events. Bats have special immune systems that help them resist viral disease and could hold the key to the next breakthrough vaccine or treatment.
Bat Conservation International is undertaking some of the highest impact conservation efforts happening anywhere in the world. But we need your support to do so.
- Location: Global
- Key missions:
- Implementing endangered species interventions such as acquiring and protecting important habitats for bats that are in imminent threat.
- Protecting and restoring landscapes such as subterranean roosts and agave nectar corridors on which bats rely for survival.
- Conducting high-priority research and developing scalable solutions to threats such as White-nose Syndrome and bat fatalities at wind energy facilities.
- Inspiring through experience so that future generations understand the importance of bats to our health and prosperity.
